Groom Spot, the new dog grooming salon on Fisher Avenue, was formally opened in September, but owner Julie Zwisdak opted to hold off on the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the construction of the business’ sign, and to coincide with Halloween.
Zwisdak, 24, and her boyfriend Larry Van Nostrand – both certified dog groomers – held a Halloween costume party for the neighborhood’s dog, complete with goodie bags for the dogs and desserts for owners.
“The community has been very welcoming and there are many wonderful dogs in this neighborhood,” Zwisdak said.
It wasn’t always a smooth path for Zwisdak, who had to negotiate with the Tuckahoe zoning and planning boards to gain the necessary permission to convert the former café into the dog grooming salon. The final inspection was completed in the beginning of September, when Groom Spot began accepting reservations.
“It has been a roller coaster ride. There were a lot of ups and downs during the planning phase,” she said. “We had a few obstacles to overcome, but in the end, we are happy to have chosen Tuckahoe as our home.”
According to Zwisdak, pet owners can rest assured that their beloved dogs will be in good hands. Only she and Van Nostrand are on the staff, and each has been a certified groomer since 2007. Reservations are currently being accepted.
“I have had pets my whole life. They become a part of your family,” she said. “We’ve been grooming dogs together for years. We’re big on pet safety and creating a comforting environment. I want the dogs to enjoy being groomed as much as we enjoy doing it.”
