After weeks of construction, the Eastchester Public Library has officially opened a new courtyard on the north side of the building that will be available for programming, reading and relaxing for patrons and the public.
The new courtyard has been in construction for weeks in the area of the building adjoining the parking lot. It is wheelchair accessible from the main parking lot and the recently installed sidewalks. Recently, three memorial plum trees were planted around the patio dedicated to Manfred Moses, Stefan and Anna Weinberg, Jack and Catherina Polak - all Holocaust survivors and former Eastchester residents.
Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita praised the contractors hired for the job, who completed the renovation expediently and under budget.
“We have been discussing an outdoor space at the library for a while and now it’s finally a reality. Very few libraries have a space like this one for use by patrons,” he said. It is aesthetically related to the Library Green in the front of the building by White Plains Road. It is also a handsome addition to the renovated Rashkoff Meeting Room, the Children’s Library, the new roof and other improvements at the library.
“This was a collaborative effort with the Eastchester Town Board, Library Board, Highway Department and Recreation, Parks and Grounds Department all working together to complete the job on time and under budget.”
Library Director Tracy Wright said that the new courtyard, along with the various improvements the library has seen in recent months and years will continue to serve the community for years.
“All of the effort will be worth it once we see the first children’s story time held there or when we see library patrons enjoying a book in the shade on a beautiful day,” she said. “The reading courtyard will be enjoyed by library users for many years to come.”
