"Gold Medal Night" will be held at Growlers, 25 Main St. in Tuckahoe, from 7-10 p.m.

Each year, craft beer brewers gather in Denver to compete at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), the United States’ largest, most reputable beer festival and competition. With more than 3,500 beers from over 700 breweries, the event is a craft beer lover’s paradise, but it’s also serious business. While visitors roam the festival, enjoying samples of beers entered into the competition, a panel of judges is given the more serious job of critiquing them. Coveted gold, silver and bronze medals of excellence are awarded to three beers in each of GABF’s beer-style categories, and the bragging rights begin.

“Winning a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival is a big deal,” says Eric Lorberfeld, owner of Growlers Beer Bistro. “Judges conduct ‘blind’ evaluations of beers from their specific area of expertise, and the awards are respected anywhere you go as a mark of being an exceptional brew. Every brewer wants one and beer lovers can taste the difference. We’re really excited to share a few of these at this event.”

Growlers Beer Bistro typically offers 17 taps, with craft beers that rotate as the kegs run dry. Because of this, the menu is always interesting but never the same – part of the bar’s unique appeal.

For Gold Medal Night, six of Growlers’ taps will be dedicated to GABF winners. Beers to be featured include: Le Freak, Green Flash Brewing Co., San Diego, Calif., American-Belgo-Style Ale Pivo, Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Paso Robles, Calif., German-Style Pilsener Allagash White, Allagash Brewing Co., Portland, Maine, Belgian-Style Witbier Double Negative, Grimm Artisinal Ales, Brooklyn, Imperial Stout reDANKulous, Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich., Imperial Red Ale Muscat Love, Great South Bay Brewery, Bay Shore.

Belgian-Style Tripel Beer events are offered every Thursday night at Growlers, followed by a post-event raffle that includes a growler full of the grand-prize-winner’s beer of choice.

Lorberfeld sees Gold Medal Night as an opportunity for local residents. “Most beer lovers on the east coast can’t fly out to Denver every year for the Great American Beer Festival,” he says. “Our Gold Medal Night will give local residents a chance to try a few award winners, side-by-side, just two weeks after the country’s biggest beer competition and festival."
