SCARSDALE, N.Y. Scarsdale Rotary has announced its intent to give grants averaging about $1,500 to three Westchester County groups and a Scarsdale teen for his Eagle Scout project.
Grants will be given to the Andrus Children's Center in Yonkers, a provider of services for children suffering from abuse, loss, neglect or autism; Heartsong in White Plains, which provides music and art therapy for children with disabilities, including six children from Scarsdale; and the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program in Brewster, a provider of equine activities to people with special needs.
Also on the list is Connor Pascale, a Scarsdale High School sophomore who created a nature trail with three outdoor classrooms on school grounds for his Eagle Scout project. The money is intended to pay for heavy equipment needed to move large logs.
Scarsdale Rotary is also contributing to international causes including New Seed International/Solace International, which assist Ghana farmers to expand the quantity and variety of their crops. The grant will be used to purchase milling equipment local farmers can use to grind corn and cassava into dough.
According to Eva Finkelstein of the Rotary Grants Committee, the club also gives scholarships to Scarsdale students.
Finkelstein also touted Rotary International's work to eradicate polio with a $455 million grant from the Gates Foundation. The effort started when there were fewer than a half dozen cases remaining worldwide.
"When you go three years without a reported case of a disease, it is considered eradicated. I think there is one case left. There's one last case, and this might be the year" when it ends, Finkelstein said. "That's why we're making such a big push."
Scarsdale Rotary meets from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Moscatos Restaurant on Scarsdale Avenue in Scarsdale.
