Members of the North American Federation of Temple Youth’s New York Region gathered at the White Plains Bowl for a “bowl-a-thon” to raise money for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, which provides financial assistance and research grants for families affected by pediatric cancer.
Jewish teenagers from Westchester and Fairfield counties, New York City and Long Island, representing 38 synagogues and temples, gathered for the event. The weekend featured student-led programming by NFTY-NAR high school seniors.
Michael Fuld of the Union of Reform Judaism praised the event and the teenagers who spent their weekend participating.
“There is something uniquely profound about enabling teens to take ownership over their own Jewish experience,” he said. “Watching the teens from Scarsdale Synagogue and the greater community work together on all aspects of the weekend was a wonderful experience.”
More than $6,000 was raised during the weekend festivities, with more than $1,000 coming from “penny wars,” where teams competed to see which region could bring in the most spare change.
Youth Director at the Scarsdale Synagogue Ivy Cohen said the teenagers enjoyed themselves while promoting their faith.
“The kids had a fantastic time,” she said. “They learned, prayed and built relationships with one another and with the many Synagogue member families who hosted them in their homes for the weekend.”
