The award is presented to one male and one female student each year at the school’s Award Convocation ceremony. The St. Michael’s College Book award is presented annually to students who “compile an impressive academic record, while also demonstrating a sustained and sincere commitment to community service.”
Kurach has been active in Manhattan, where he goes to school, volunteering at a Madison Avenue church. Every Thursday night, he spends time helping to prepare and serve food to local residents with a need. Kurach said that he got interested in volunteering through the Loyola School Christian program, which is required over four years.
“I’ve been going [to the church] on and off for two years. It’s a sort of soup kitchen. It’s a place where people can get dinner, no questions asked,” he said. “It started as something I did with the program, now it’s really just for fun.”
The Loyola senior said he was surprised by his nomination, but was honored to receive such a distinction. He’s currently in the process of narrowing his college choices, but coyly teased that he’s still looking around.
“I was really happy, I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” Kurach said. “It was nice to be recognized for the stuff I’ve done. It’s nice to have it be a surprise, coming from an outside source. It’s really a good pat on the back.”
Once Kurach graduates, he’s hopeful of landing a position in the entertainment business, whether it is as an actor, writer, director, or some combination of the three. Tony Oroszlany, the president of the Loyola School and 1987 graduate, added that the soon-to-be graduate will be sorely missed when he goes to college.
“Will is a terrific young man who excels in our classrooms, on stage and as a member of our forensics program,” he said. “It’s hard to believe he’s already a senior.”
