Judith Leire, a ceramicist from ArtsWestchester, will volunteer at the AELC three days a week with half hour classes for 3 year olds, and 45 minute classes for 4 year old children.
There will be a schedule of weekly art activities that will evolve as the creativity and ability of the participants advances. Leire will bring several learning elements into the activities and will relate activities to books that will be read by the children.
Children will socialize with their peers and become familiar with clay and paintbrushes, and will have the opportunity to practice counting. This initiative is made possible through funding from the Westchester County Board of Legislators and a grant from ArtsWestchester.
“Art is my passion and to be able to share it with young children is a gift,” Leire said. “Each week, we see the children progressing and step by step, they’re learning how to create their own works of art.”
Participants will have the opportunity to observe the entire art process from conception to completion. When the children finish their projects, Leire will take the pieces home and fire the clay in her kiln.
The program will end with an art show in December, showcasing the work being done during classes.
“We’re lucky to receive a grant from ArtsWestchester for such a unique program,” Vidia Cordero, the AELC director said. “We strive to give the best to the children at the ANDRUS Early Learning Center, and we’re thrilled to add the ceramic program.”
