EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – It was a breakthrough year for Eastchester residents, as the town, and its two villages in Bronxville and Tuckahoe saw great strides made on several important projects and issues in 2013.
In Eastchester, the town reached an agreement with County Executive Rob Astorino to assume responsibility for the management of Scout Field. Tuckahoe saw the ground break on several new business and real estate projects, while the village of Bronxville remains torn on the notion of permanent lights being installed at Chambers Field.
Field space for local athletics and recreational sports were a hot button issue this year in each of the municipalities. After Eastchester school officials found exposed seams on the high school’s synthetic turf field, they were forced to close down the field – the track remains open – and search for additional field space, before voters approved a special $2 million bond to replace the field next year.
While voters overwhelmingly voted to replace the Eastchester field, residents in Bronxville remain split over what to do about the lack of field space for their own students and athletes. The school district commissioned a feasibility study regarding the installation of permanent lights at Chambers Field – much to the chagrin of certain residents - and will continue to debate the merit of various options in 2014.
Town officials in Eastchester took steps toward increasing the number of field hours available for local athletes in September, when they assumed responsibility for the management of Scout Field in Bronxville. With additional funds coming from the county, the town will be responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the park, while creating an additional field for play.
Outside of the search for available field hours, there were several exciting construction projects in Tuckahoe, as the village looks to expand its residential and commercial districts.
The long-awaited Broken Bow Brewery opened on Marbledale Road in August, much to the delight of thirsty Tuckahoe patrons, and the village – in accordance with the Eastchester Planning and Zoning Boards – recently approved an ice rink down the road, which will see construction beginning in January.
After several decades, the Immaculate Conception School completed construction on its first parish gym, while contractors broke ground on a 108-unit luxury rental building on Main Street in February.
