TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – After nearly a year and a half of reconstruction, Yonkers Avenue in Tuckahoe, is set to be re-opened to traffic on Jan. 7.

After dealing with delays by the contractor, Mayor Steve Ecklond announced that the village has entered its final phase of reconstruction of the roadbed and is prepping it for traffic.

On Wednesday, the first of three concrete road sections was installed. The second section will be put in place this weekend, with the final being completed shortly after the holidays.

There will be residual construction activity along the riverbank after the road reopens, but that work will not interfere with the traffic flow on Yonkers Avenue.

This will come as welcome news to Tuckahoe residents who recently took the Village Board of Trustees to task regarding the project, which has been delayed multiple times.

At the Dec. 10 Village Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Greg Luisi called the operation incompetent.

“At the July 16 Village Board meeting, I expressed my displeasure and lack of confidence with the project. A ‘construction fiasco’ is how I described what took place on the road,” he said. “It’s now Dec. 10 and it’s still not open. Today, I call it ‘construction incompetence.’ ”
