Memorial Service Scheduled For Westchester Teacher Killed In Crash

Memorial services have been scheduled for the Somers Central School District teacher killed in a motorcycle crash near Jones Beach on Long Island this past weekend.

Sherri Mangus, 56, worked as a special education teacher at the Somers Intermediate School.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, April 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Homes Inc., at 47 Jerusalem Ave. in Hicksville in Nassau County.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church at 5 Fordham Ave. in Hicksville.

Mangus was riding a three-wheel motorcycle with her husband, Peter, around noon on Sunday. on Bay Parkway when the motorcycle lost control as it was about to merge on the Meadowbrook State Parkway, state police said.

The motorcycle crossed over a dividing island, causing Sherri Mangus to be ejected, according to police.

Sherri Mangus, who lived in Levittown, lost her helmet during the collision and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for serious head trauma. She was pronounced dead a short while later. Peter Mangus, 64, was uninjured in the crash.

Mangus joined the Somers Central School District in September 2007 after working as a special-ed teacher at Rebecca School for Autism in New York City.
