Eastchester Enters Partnership With Italian Town

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastchester has entered into a partnership overseas, participating in the Sister City Program with the town of Ruvo di Puglia in the province of Bari, Italy.

Sister Cities International, a network designed to create diplomacy and strengthen partnerships between American and international communities, was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower 56 years ago. According to the Sister Cities website, “A sister city program is a volunteer group of ordinary citizens who, with the support of their local elected officials, form long-term relationships with people and organizations in a city abroad.”

Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita met with Luciano Lamonarca, a world-renowned tenor who is serving as president of the Puglia Center of America, in New Rochelle to formally announce the partnership last week. Lamonarca will serve as the liaison between the towns, and is tasked with coordinating all activities between the municipalities.

Colavita said Ruvo di Puglia is known for its vineyards and olive gardens.

“The Sister City program allows communities to exchange ideas, gain an international perspective and increase their understanding of global issues,” Colavita said during the press conference. “It can lead to economic growth, increased tourism and reliable business contacts.”

The town has planned several events in the coming months to promote the Sister City program. Lamonarca is scheduled to perform at the Lake Isle Columbus Day Carnival on Oct. 7, and the Puglia Center is hosting its annual gala at Lake Isle in November. A delegation of visitors from Bari is scheduled to visit in April, when Colavita will get to meet his Italian counterpart.
