EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – There was a steady flow of young voters making their way to polling places in Eastchester on Tuesday, surprising poll workers assisting at the high school.

Lines were kept to a minimum, but poll workers were impressed with the diversity and volume of voters that flocked to polling places.

“It’s been really heavy. I’m not sure about the last presidential election, but compared to local elections this is really busy,” District 28 Chair John Spruck said. “We’ve been impressed. We’ve had a lot of younger people this year.”

As of 4 p.m., nearly half – 208 out of 486 – of registered voters in District 28 had already cast their vote. Spruck said that more than 150 voters had come out before 9 a.m., and he expects a similar number after people return home from work.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order that allowed those displaced by Hurricane Sandy to vote via affidavit had a limited effect in Eastchester, with only one being cast. Spruck said poll workers try to accommodate all prospective voters that show up to locations, but some need to be redirected to their proper district.

“We had some people who aren’t regulars who thought that, since they can vote on school budgets in this district, they can vote [Tuesday]” he said. “We noticed a lot of different people coming out this year.”
