Social Awareness club leaders Natalia Kaminski, Liam Siegel and Martha Thomas represented the high school at a Social Innovation Series Conference, where they presented their project, “Open Minds, Open Arms,” which focuses on bringing awareness to social, mental and emotional student health.
The grants were provided by AdCapYouth, a national organization that awards grants to student-generated program. This is the second time in recent weeks that students have earned the district grant money through AdCapYouth, following middle school students Kelly Weild and Esther Thomet last week.
The Social Issues Awareness club is the brainchild of Siegel, a junior that conceptualized the program while she was still in middle school. Since its establishment, members of the club have been working hard to ensure that every student feels included during their time in high school.
With the grant money, the Social Issues Awareness club is planning a school-wide unity day that would “bring together everyone at the high school during several lunch assemblies.”
Michael Marino, a Bronxville High School teacher and advisor to the club noted that the students banded together to reach a common goal.
“They always seem to rise to the occasion and not only meet, but exceed my expectations,” he said. “The project idea, ‘Open Minds, Open Arms’ they presented will bring awareness to some of the social, mental and emotional challenges students face.”
