TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – Progress is being made on the parish gymnasium at the Immaculate Conception School in Tuckahoe, and construction remains on schedule and should be completed in April, according to head contractor Howard Dym.
The frame of the gymnasium has been constructed and concrete was being poured for a walkway to the school on Monday afternoon. Materials around the recently expanded staging area were covered with the increased likelihood of rain coming this week.
“The project is moving very well, there have been no surprises,” Dym said. “Completion is still scheduled for April.”
Construction on the 9,500-square-foot-building began in July, following a groundbreaking ceremony the month before. It took more than a decade of planning and fund-raising for the school to get its long awaited gym. There were plans for a gym to be built in 1953 that never came to fruition, said the Rev. Eric Raaser, pastor of the church.
Students, faculty members and parishioners have been hard at work all year raising money for the $3.5 million project, including a change drive and walkathon in September.
Peter Gisolfi Associates designed the building and DHI Construction Services is in charge of construction.
When completed, the gymnasium will serve as the new home for parish basketball teams, which had to rent space at other gyms in the past. The school hopes that it will help boost its volleyball program and will serve as a space to host plays and assemblies for the school.
“This is a long time coming,” Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond said at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We’re all so excited that they’ll have their own home. It’ll be nice for the students to have their own identity and space.”
