EASTCHESTER, N.Y. At the Eastchester High School commencement on Friday morning, speakers told the 201 blue- and white-clad graduates that its not always about where youre going, but sometimes its about how you get there.
Students were reminded that money can be fleeting, and its more important to chase a life of happiness and fulfillment. Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita said that its key that the graduates dont forget the small town in Westchester County theyve called home for all or parts of 18 years.
Show good character. Be loyal to your friends and family. Youre more than prepared for leadership, he said. Appreciate what was done for you, and never forget where you came from. Be proud of this town, because theyre proud of you.
While an audience of family and loved ones fanned themselves under the glare of a hot sun, the senior class was praised for what theyve accomplished, and celebrated for whats yet to come.
We have the foundation to make a mark in this world. Its our responsibility to be productive members of society, valedictorian Gabrielle Pinto said. We must choose careers that are morally fulfilling, that will leave us with a smile on our face. Its not about financial gin or status, but to give love to your labor.
Schools Superintendent Marilyn C. Terranova said that the importance of the graduating seniors transcends the town or high school.
Youve taken yourselves and Eastchester beyond just the bounds of this district, she said. Take your friends and families to the next phase of your life. Find your voice and inner passion. Take charge of your next opportunity. Advocate for what matters to you.
Salutatorian Nicholas Widmaier reminded his classmates that simply because theyve cleared the hurdle of high school, things arent going to get any easier as they enter the next portions of their life, whether its college, the military or the workforce.
Things are only going to get more challenging, but adversity is a part of life, he said. Dont let anyone or anything get in the way of your dreams. Life is not a walk in the park, sometimes you need to keep on walking to find success. No matter what happens, we will all be Eagles forever.
