Each year, Eastchester Middle School is one of thousands of schools in the United States to participate in the National Geographic Bee. The contest, open to students in grades 4-8, is designed to inspire students to be curious about the world. The competition is both entertaining and challenging. Middle school Social Studies teacher Rick Burmester runs the Geographic Bee each year with the assistance of his colleague, Joseph Cirasella.
This year, the following students made it to the final school round, which was in January. The participants included Kevin Jiao, Alex Siegel, Joseph Grogan, Matthew Vanadia, Elias Dube, Julian Grandahl and Faith Vassar. Eighth-grader Joseph Grogan won that competition and hopes to go to the next round in Albany. The national competition of the Geogrphic Bee will be May 11-13 at the National Geographic Society’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It will be televised at 8 p.m. May 15 on the National Geographic Channel and NG Wild.
