The fifth annual awards program was held Thursday, Dec. 4, to recognize individuals, businesses, community groups, students, government entities or other organizations that conduct or participate in activities that benefit the community’s environment.
Eastchester’s youngest students are being educated on ways that they can contribute to making their school green. At the other end of the spectrum, the High School Going Green Club has been committed for many years to increasing awareness of environmental alternatives and promoting recycling, among other initiatives.
Peter McCartt, chairperson of the Environmental Committee presented the Green Medallion Award.
Commendations were also received from the state Assembly, the Westchester County Board of Legislators, state Sen. George Latimer and the Eastchester Town Board.
Some examples of winning activities include:
- Recycling and use of recycled materials.
- Pollution prevention.
- Waste reduction.
- Protection of the natural environment.
- Enhancement of the natural environment.
- Organizing cleanup of litter or debris.
- Stormwater mitigation.
- Environmental education or increasing awareness of environmental alternatives.
- Monitoring the condition of the town’s environment (streams, habitat, etc.).
- Supporting the Environmental Committee.
- Activities focusing on any of the 3 R’s (reduce/reuse/recycle).
