The lifelong Tuckahoe resident concluded workshops with high school English classes Tuesday afternoon. Topics included ways to focus on a subject, developing character and writing dialogue.
Carraturo, who doubles as a Wall Street salesman during the day, is the author of historical fiction novels “Cameron Nation” in 2011 and “Columbus Avenue Boys” last year. His latest book is set locally and is a fictional account of Vincent Scala and a family history that dates back to World War II.
The author helped students identify fictitious elements, structure stories and discussed ways historical fiction can convince readers events potentially could be true. Carraturo explained the importance of research to establish authenticity.
Carraturo estimates he spends as many as nine months to write a novel, with an additional few tacked on for editing. He stressed it’s important for young writers to be sure they stick within the time period they are writing.
“I never really considered myself a writer. I've always enjoyed it and was able to give good descriptions and lots of details,” Carraturo said at a lecture in 2012. “History is so important for people to know about. This is my way of giving back. People are going to be tricked into learning and will be entertained at the same time.”
