Eastchester Boys 400 Relay Team Sets School Record

ARMONK, N.Y. – Fred Schmidt went back to recheck the time Saturday after Eastchester’s race in a varsity boys 4x100 relay heat at the Westchester County Track and Field Championships at Byram Hills High School.

When Schmidt, an Eastchester senior, first heard it, he reported back to Eastchester coach Steve Borys, who immediately asked him to verify it.

Schmidt returned with a huge smile on his face, ecstatic to learn that he, Jon Adkins, Jack Calby and Grant Cohen had clocked in at 44.43 seconds, a school record.

The quartet broke the record of 44.47 seconds, which had stood since 1936.

“I didn’t believe it,” Schmidt said. “We feel we have an amazing sprint squad and distance squad, and it was a matter of putting it all together.

“We came in very relaxed and we were very prepared.”

Going into the heat, Eastchester’s prior best this season was 45.7 seconds.

Cohen opened the race and handed the baton to Schmidt. As he was finishing his 100, Schmidt handed off to Calby, and Atkins brought it home.

“We did not come in thinking about a record,” Schmidt said. “We just wanted to win our heat and medal.”
