Junction Girls Softball Closes Summer With Title

EAST FISHKILL, N.Y. - The Junction Girls 12-and-under travel softball team closed out their summer season in style, winning the East Fishkill Fastpitch Softball Tournament.

It was the second consecutive weekend the Junction Girls won a tournament, and their fourth of the summer. The team went 5-0 in the east Fishkill Tournament, adding the exclamation point with a 6-4 win over Brewster.

Sam Turco pitched the team to an 11-1 win over Yorktown to open the tournament. Ashley Puig supplied the offense with a pair of ground-rule doubles. Cassidy Montes followed with an 8-0 win over Brewster, powered by Cassie McGrath’s two hits and three RBIs. The team closed out the day with a 15-2 win, behind Mia Steinberg, over Fishkill. Daniella “Speedy” Chiodi and Gia Saul paced the offense with three hits and two hits, respectively.

McGrath no-hit Yorktown, 13-1, in a semifinal to earn a second meeting with Brewster, in the final. With the score even in the sixth, Marie McNerny and Kim Zapata delivered hits to give the Junction Girls the lead in an eventual 6-4 win. Turco, McGrath and Montes, the winning pitcher, also had RBI hits in the game.

“The improvement, this season, has been astronomical,” manager John McGrath said. “The girls worked hard all winter and it paid off on the field. I can’t wait for the fall season. The sky is the limit for the girls.”
