As a result, Lawrence and Mitchell were highly recruited for college. And on Monday, the Ursuline standouts both signed a national letter of intent.
Lawrence, a four-year varsity basketball player, will attend San Diego State next fall.
Mitchell, a four-year varsity softball player, will attend the University of North Carolina-Charlotte next autumn.
Lawrence and Mitchell both signed their respective letters with their parents and coaches present.
Lawrence was also considering Delaware, St. Joseph’s in Pennsylvania, Albany, and Georgetown; Mitchell was also looking at Lehigh, the University of California, and Stanford.
“All the players were very nice and welcoming,” said Lawrence, a Yorktown resident. “I know they will work with me and help me get to the next level.”
When Lawrence returned home from an official visit to San Diego State, she discussed the school with her parents, family, and friends and made her final decision. Lawrence, who plans to major in either psychology or English, said the year-round beautiful California weather also appealed to her, and she has an uncle living just 30 minutes from campus.
Mitchell, of Eastchester, is a friend of Haldane graduate - and future teammate - freshman Chelsea Lisikatos, so Mitchell spoke to her about the school and its softball program.
“She said she loves everything about the school and team,” Mitchell said of Lisikatos. "She told me softball is tough, but when I get there it's going to be fun, and I'm going to be glad I did it.”
Mitchell, who is considering a physical therapy or engineering major, also has a family connection to UNC-Charlotte. She said her aunt and uncle are both UNC-Charlotte graduates and live 30 minutes from campus.
Both girls agreed that they were happy the recruiting process is over so they can relax and concentrate on school and their respective sport. They were also in agreement about how nice it was that they both signed their college letters together.
