HARSTDALE, N.Y. – The Woodlands High School football team capped an undefeated season and celebrated its Homecoming with a 47-13 drubbing of Tuckahoe on Saturday afternoon.
Junior running back Tyrone Barber had one of the best games of any football player in Section 1 this season as he accumulated more than 400 yards of total offense and accounted for five touchdowns.
Barber had touchdown runs of 50, 45 and 18 yards along with two fourth-quarter kickoff returns for touchdowns of 99 and 75 yards. On the 99-yard return, Barber ran sideline to sideline, broke three tackles and then took off down the right sideline to the end zone.
“It was all the seniors. The seniors blocked for me,” Barber said. “It wasn’t made for me to do what I did today, but I did it. The seniors did their job, too.”
The Falcons will host a playoff game for the first time since their championship season in 1985, long before any of the players on the team were born.
Head coach Mike Meade, in just his second year at the helm at Woodlands, led the team to a 7-0 record this season.
“It’s awesome. I came here to build a program. I just didn’t know it was going to happen this quick,” Meade said. “And it’s really to the credit of these kids. They work and they believe in us.”
Tuckahoe did not get on the board until Kayvon Reid punched it in from the 1-yard line with 5:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. Reid added a 46-yard touchdown run with 2:26 left, but it was far too little, too late.
The Tigers started the season 4-0 and had a strong showing against Dobbs Ferry, the defending state champion. But the Tigers are 0-2-1 since that game and are trending in the wrong direction at the wrong time.
Woodlands went undefeated this season, but Barber was the first one to point out that those seven wins mean nothing if the Falcons lose in the first round of the playoffs.
“We’re not undefeated any more. We’re 0-0 now,” Barber said. “We’ve just got to win, go 2-0 now and win the sectional championship and we go from there.”
