TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- There may be a little bit of dust on those snow shovels right now, but volunteers are standing by for neighbors in need.
County Legislator Sheila Marcotte (R-Tuckahoe) announced her snow angel program for residents of Tuckahoe and parts of Eastchester. When the snow starts to accumulate, residents can call on a snow angel to dig them out.
"The program matches volunteer youth with people who are unable to remove snow on their property because they are elderly or disabled," Marcotte explained. "People request an angel, young people sign up and I match them up."
Marcotte matches angels up with volunteers based on proximity, pairing needy residents with nearby angels.
"If no one in their neighborhood signs up, then I can't give them an angel," she explained.
Marcotte said the angel will remove snow on steps, front walkways and sidewalks free of charge.
"Driveways can be negotiated with the volunteer," Marcotte said. "The purpose of the program is to help people get out of their house or in case of an emergency, for others get in."
Marcotte said interested angels or people seeking assistance can email her at tuckahoesnowangels@yahoo.com
"So far we cover Tuckahoe and parts of Eastchester, but we hope to grow," Marcotte said.
