EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Two Eastchester High School runners were selected by the Westchester County Track and Field Coaching Committee for All-County recognition for their work during the 2013 outdoor track season.

Graduating senior Jon Alkins was chosen for the 100 and 200-meter dashes, while rising junior Martin O’Connell was named to the team in the 800-meter race, coach Matt D’Amico said.

Last weekend Alkins concluded one of the finest track and field seasons Eastchester has ever seen with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash at the New York State Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School.

Alkins' time in his final race set a school record and was one of the fastest finishes in Section 1 history. He will continue his career next season as a sprinter at Binghamton University.

“Senior sprinting sensation Jon Alkins proved one last time why he is one of the greatest athletes in Eastchester history,” D’Amico said. “In the concluding race of his career, Jon outran some of the fastest sprinters in the country.”

O’Connell ended his season two weeks ago at the Section 1 State qualifying event in White Plains. While the sophomore didn’t qualify for the state championship in the mile, he established a new personal best and goes into the offseason with some momentum behind him for next season.

“Martin has established himself as a force in Section 1 this season,” D’Amico said. “He will go into next season as one of the premiere runners in Westchester County.”
